Hi everyone, I’m Hart, and I recently joined the Village Storytelling Centre as the Step Up to Net Zero Coordinator. In my five-month placement, I’m working with the organisation to achieve our sustainability goals, in alignment with the values of community engagement and environmental responsibility that are central to the Village’s work. Last week, we kicked off the holiday season with a circular gift swap, which is a simple yet impactful way to reduce waste while sharing gifts and strengthening connections with one another.

For the swap, everyone brought in a book that they already owned and were ready to pass on. We placed all the books in a bag, and everyone drew one at random. I brought in A Lie of the Mind by Sam Shepard, and I came home with Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo. Not only did I receive a fantastic book that I might not have otherwise discovered, I also had the chance to share a book I love with someone. It was a fun way to learn more about my co-workers by hearing the stories behind their choices – in that way, this swap easily opens up opportunities for further storytelling.

If you’re looking for a creative, mindful, and affordable way to celebrate the holidays, I highly recommend trying something similar with your loved ones. You don’t have to swap books – the idea is simply to exchange something thoughtful without purchasing anything new. It’s a great way to reduce your environmental footprint, embrace the spirit of giving, and spark meaningful conversations.
